Hi y’all and happy Top Ten Tuesday!
Today’s theme is: Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book. This is both a challenging one and an interesting one. I’ve never been one to need any reason to pick up a book, and at the same time I’m thinking if it’s pick up as in purchase a book, pick up as in read the blurb, pick up as in looking at the cover – or pick up as in, sit down to read a book….. Maybe it’s because English isn’t my native language, but to me “pick up a book” can cover many different things. As for the Top Ten Tuesday theme I’ll focus on “things that make me read a book”.
Reason 1:
Trusted authors
With trusted authors, I’ve been known to buy a book of theirs simply because they’ve written it. No blurb reading or cover studying necessary in those cases.
Reason 2:
The cover
A cover that makes me look twice. Yes, sometimes (if the price is right) that can be all the reason needed, for me to be interested in reading the book.
Reason 3
The genre
I have been known to read books just based on the genre they fall into. Unfortunately, more of than not, this have not proved to be the best way of finding my next great read.
Reason 4
The blurb
This is probably the most common reason for reading a book. But if the blurb is interesting me, I don’t need to be persuaded further to get myself a copy of the book.
Reason 5
Reviews and book chats
I find that reading a book I’ve heard about a books from readers, is a good way to go. The weird thing is, than often it’s the negative reviews that intrigue me more than the good ones. Often it’s the worse it is, the more interested I get. Like I just have to find out, if it’s really that bad, or find out what it is that doesn’t resonate with the other readers. Honestly, I don’t recommend this because I often find myself thinking “why am I even reading this?”. But there has been a few times where I’m loving what others hated – and that’s the times that made it worth it.
Reason 6
Freebies
I am a sucker for freebies!! I am guilty of pressing “buy now” in the Kindle library, just because the purchase price is £0,00. Again, this is not something I particularly recommend, because I have like 50+ books in my Kindle library that I’ve never read, but that I own just because they were free. Even though, I know this, I’m still a sucker for a freebie and for making myself believe I’ll read the book sooner or later. And who knows, maybe I will – someday.
Reason 7
Hype
Some books are so hyped up, that it’s impossible to not be aware of their release. At least once in a while, that’s enough to make me read the book. It doesn’t mean that I’ll hit the “buy now” button the instant it releases, but I usually do so within the first few weeks.
Reason 8
Anticipated release
For an anticipated release you can be sure of one thing; as soon as the clock on my phone shows 00:01am I am reloading the Amazon Kindle page – all ready to hit the “buy now” button, followed by the “read now”. This is one of the best feelings, and I love the build up.
Reason 9
Rainy days
In my world it’s almost law that when the weather is really bad outside, it’s the perfect time to binge read on the sofa. Under a blanket, and preferably with my purring fur baby on my stomach. Of course I read in all kinds of weather, but those days when it’s really bad outside, it just really feels like it’s the perfect activity.
Reason 10
Creatures and/or beings
As someone who really loves reading paranormal books, the creatures I’ll meet within the pages can be enough to make me want to read the book. A few years I found a series by random, by looking for paranormal romance books about the Four Horsemen. Unfortunately, the series was really bad – but on the plus side, searches later on, led me to an amazing series about them.
Well for once it was easier than I thought, to come up with ten different things to match the weekly theme. I didn’t actually think that many things could be part of why I pick certain books, which made this a really fun post to write!

A lot of these are what motivate me to get a book, too. Definitely a trusted author, a fascinating blurb, a fascinating plot set in a genre I like, freebies, a pretty cover…lol I could go on! They’re all something I look for 🙂

Haha yeah, seems a lot more goes into picking a book, than I originally thought. It also explains why I often buy multiple books at the same time 😛

A well-written blurb can definitely sway me to read a book, even one I’ve heard mixed things about. I never realized what an art blurb-writing is until I started writing my own for my blog reviews. It’s not easy!
Happy TTT!

Ah true. I’ve too been guilty of underestimating blurb writing too, until I had to do it myself 😂
