This is it, y’all!

The epic showdown. The final instalment. It is time to unmask the mysterious Elias Munn, and (hopefully) get all the answers I’m craving. These books are written from Kiera’s perspective, but for someone who has the gift of seeing, she’s been very much in the dark. It felt more like a case of the blind leading the blind, than being led by some all powerful half-breed gifted with an unnatural attention to detail. I should clarify that this isn’t a critique, Tim O’Rourke has done well with sparsely leaving breadcrumbs throughout the series. Not enough that I had it all figured out, but enough to keep me on my toes!

As Kiera and her merry gang of helpers, lover(s) and fellow half-breeds enter the Hollows, they have a plan. Yet, something continuously goes wrong. As a result of them refusing to proper deal with the fact that there’s a traitor in their midst, they start dying one by one. When evidence is planted at a particularly gruesome crime scene, Kiera is forced to reconsider her loyalties but she keeps focusing on the wrong things. The amount of angst, suspension, drama and intrigue delivered in this book is extremely intriguing, especially since there’s no down time. When I’ve read such books previously, I often feel like I haven’t gotten all the answers I wanted. But that’s definitely not the case here. Tim also manages to give me every single answer I could ever have hoped for, even to questions I hadn’t thought of asking.

The only reason I’m not giving the book 5 full stars, is because of Kiera and Keely Beresford. Though, she’s getting more serious, Kira seems to go backwards maturity wise. It feels like her lack of sight comes more from her refusing to take the situation as serious as it really is. And through that she doesn’t see where all the big fat arrows are pointing – even though there’s a lot of evidence and self-explanatory reasons to consider. But that’s not what I found the hardest to deal with. No, the hardest part for me was her refusal of making a choice. Actually, not because she doesn’t want to, but because of the childish way she acts about it. And as for Keely Beresford; I have no doubt she would be amazing at narrating children books. But as for this series, her overly theatrical reading way just too over the top.

I think I will be giving Kiera Hudson – Series Two a shot at some point, but it will not be on audio, I will be reading it instead.
