Reprise is the third and final book in the Ruby Riot series, which is a spin-off from the Blue Phoenix series. It’s not necessary to read the Blue Phoenix series, or Cadence & Shuffle (first two books in the Ruby Riot series) first, but I’d recommend it as some of the characters do overlap.
This is the story about Nate (Ruby Riot’s drummer) and Riley (part of Ruby Riot’s PR team).
The band are doing great after touring with Blue Phoenix. When Nate hooks up with someone, it’s purely for sex, there’ll be no cuddles afterwards. Nate has been seriously hurt in the past and now he’s guarding his heart appropriately. With thick solid walls around it, and just because the other band members have found love, doesn’t mean Nate is looking for anything similar.
Riley is not only in the PR business, she’s also in the secret-keeping-business. For years’ Nate has treated Riley like shit, so now she goes out of her way to stay as far from him as possible. However, when one of the PR people on her team bails on a job, she has no choice but go there and finish the job herself.
When Nate and Riley first face each other in this book, Nate is being a complete d*ck! But they do manage to make it through a few appearances without killing each other. For Riley this makes it harder and harder for her to keep up her cold front. However, when it’s time to leave there’s a problem with her car (well, it’s gone, stolen) so ends up catching a ride with Nate. Nate still wants to show Riley who’s the boss and somehow his stubborn and immature behaviour ends up getting them both snowed in. For days.
Nate and Riley need to learn to get along, at least long enough for the snow to melt. However, without the pressure of everyday life on them, it doesn’t take long before they slowly start to let down their guards and let the sparks fly.
Personally, this book wasn’t for me. I’m having proper issues with Riley. The secret she’s keeping is absolutely ridiculous but at the same time, it says a lot about one’s character when you go to such great lengths to hide something like that. At the same time, Nate, he’s just a man child that needs to grow the F up.
I still love Lisa’s writing and her attention to details. She’s so careful with the words she chooses, and it shows throughout the books. So even though, they weren’t all for me, I’ll still be looking for more boos she’s written.
